eToro in India – Availability and Regulatory Status

Availability for Indian Residents

EToro does not accept Indian residents for retail onboarding. The company lists India among restricted countries as of 2026. There is no SEBI registration for eToro in India, and cross-border retail solicitation is not offered.

If you are an Indian resident, you cannot open an account, fund it, or place a trade with eToro. The platform blocks new onboarding at the country level.

Why India Is Blocked

Retail forex and CFD trading is tightly restricted in India under RBI and FEMA regulations. Residents are permitted to trade only INR-based currency pairs (USD/INR, EUR/INR, GBP/INR, JPY/INR) and permitted cross-currency derivatives on SEBI-recognised exchanges: NSE, BSE, and MSE.

Trading spot forex or CFDs with offshore brokers is illegal for residents. Remitting funds abroad for margin forex trading is not a permitted purpose under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme. The RBI Master Direction on Electronic Trading Platforms prohibits operating a forex ETP in India without RBI authorisation.

Regulatory Leverage and Margin Rules

Exchange-traded INR currency derivatives in India use margin-based trading under SEBI and exchange SPAN plus exposure margins, roughly 3–5% margin (approximately 20–30x leverage on notional). Offshore brokers illegally soliciting Indian residents advertise 100x–1000x leverage, but using them is prohibited.

Red Flags and Unauthorised Platforms

The RBI publishes an Alert List of unauthorised forex trading platforms. As of the 19 November 2025 update, the list totals 95 entities. In that update, seven platforms were added: Starnet FX, CapPlace, Mirrox, Fusion Markets, Trive, NXG Markets, and Nord FX. The RBI states the list is not exhaustive.

FYI
Always verify any international broker against SEBI (https://www.sebi.gov.in) and RBI (https://www.rbi.org.in) registers before depositing funds.

For currency trading, the legal path runs through SEBI-recognised exchanges only. Binary options and offshore CFDs are off-limits for residents.

Questions

Can I open a eToro account in India?

+

No. eToro does not onboard residents of India: No SEBI registration; cross-border retail solicitation not offered. Accounts opened through workarounds are outside the broker's own terms.

Why can I not open an account with eToro here?

+

The broker onboards clients through entities that do not cover India, so residents fall outside its terms of service. Opening an account through a workaround leaves you without the protections the terms describe.

What should I look at instead?

+

Check which entity would hold your money, whether it is licensed by a tier-1 regulator, and whether that licence covers residents of India - before you deposit anything.
